Safe Driving as the Daylight Hours Shorten

By EMT Ken Sterner
November 2, 2015

Daylight Saving Time ends every year on the first Sunday in November. As the daylight hours shorten, more driving to and from work or other activities will take place in the dark.
Here are some safety tips for driving in the dark.

• Prepare your car for night driving. Clean headlights, taillights, signal lights, and mirrors.
• Have your headlights properly aligned. Misaligned headlights can blind other drivers or reduce your ability to see the road.
• Conduct regular maintenance checks to assure all signal and brake lights are functioning properly.
• Clean the windshield’s interior to eliminate build-up of dirt and grime that can cause glare.
• Use low beams when driving through fog.
• If there is any doubt, turn on your headlights. Lights make it easier for other drivers to see you.
• Reduce your speed and increase your following distances. Distances are more difficult to gauge at night.
• When following another vehicle, keep your headlights on low bean so you don’t blind the driver ahead of you.
• Don’t ignore eye fatigue. Address it immediately with frequent stops or pull into a rest area and catch a nap.
• Stem smoking urges. Cigarette smoke can cloud your vision.
• If you have car trouble, pull off the road as far as possible. Turn on flashers and the dome light inside the car. Stay off the roadway and get passengers away from the area.
