The Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a dwelling fire in the 3900 block of Federal Hill Road at 07:08. Engine 714 was first to arrive to find an odor of electrical burning inside one of the bedrooms. No fire was found initially, but after investigation by engine 714's crew, the cause of the odor was located: an overloaded power strip found under a piece of furniture. Units cleared the scene at 07:59.

All Homeowners are encouraged to use electrical extension cords wisely and not overload them or the wall sockets. Also,

• Routinely check your electrical appliances and wiring.

• Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately.

• Keep electrical appliances away from wet floors and counters; pay special care to electrical appliances in the bathroom and kitchen.

• If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.

• Have working smoke alarms to increase your chances of surviving a fire.

• Have a Happy and SAFE New Year!!
