The Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a reported basement fire in the 4000 block of Old York Road at 04:27. Engine 714 was the first unit to arrive on the scene of a single-story rancher with heavy smoke showing from the alpha (front) side.

Engine 714's crew advanced a 13/4-inch hand line through the basement sliding door to the source of the fire. Jacksonville Engine 473 was the second engine to arrive and advanced another hand line to the 1st floor to check for any extension and to protect the stairwell. 714's crew found furniture on fire near a wood stove with mild extension into the ceiling. The entry crew quickly knocked out the flames and the fire was declared under control at 04:51. Crews remained on the scene for salvage and overhaul of the building and cleared at 06:26.
